Glycolic Peel

This is often referred to as “the lunchtime peel” as the procedure takes less than half an hour. Through the safe removal of the top micro-thin layer of damaged skin cells, a glycolic peel stimulates cell division, which results in the creation of new and healthy cells. This birth of new cells leads to smoother skin, and the diminishing of fine lines and evening out of discoloration.

A glycolic peel improves the appearance of skin through the application of glycolic acid. For optimal results, patients typically undergo the treatment every six to eight weeks. However, this can vary depending on skin type. A mild tingling sensation is often experienced during the procedure, but it does not last long once the treatment is complete.

One thing that should be noted for this procedure, unlike most others offered by Nuderm, is an increased sensitivity to sunlight by the skin for several days. Sunscreen, which is recommended regardless of the procedure, is strongly suggested for several days after a peel.

FAQ

How does a glycolic peel work?
As one of the milder acids used in a peel, glycolic acid exfoliates the superficial top layer of the skin. It also helps to encourage the growth of collagen. Both of these actions encourage the growth of healthy, new skin cells.

How does it compare to peels using higher strength acids?
Although the efficacy of a higher strength peel may improve due to the stronger acid, the possibility of irritation also increases. With this in mind, there are several varieties of glycolic peels that provide little to no irritation, but have a higher effectiveness than other peels of a similar acidity.

Before the procedure, are there any precautions that should be taken?
Three to four days before a glycolic peel it is recommended that you stop using any prescription creams such as topical antibiotics for acne. A few days after the treatment, you can resume the use of such creams.
